Unit Converter - Free Metric & Imperial Conversion Tool

Convert measurements between metric and imperial systems instantly. Choose from six categories: length, weight, volume, temperature, area, and speed. Enter any value and select source and target units—results update in real time. The converter handles precise conversion factors for accurate results. Temperature conversions use exact formulas between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin. Quick preset buttons offer common conversions like feet to meters or pounds to kilograms. All calculations run locally in your browser.

How to Use This Unit Converter

Selecting a Category

Choose the measurement type you need to convert. Six categories cover most conversion needs: Length handles distances from millimeters to miles, Weight converts mass measurements, Volume deals with liquid and container capacities, Temperature switches between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin, Area covers surface measurements, and Speed converts velocity units.

Entering Values

Type a number in the "From" field. The converter accepts decimal values—enter 3.5, 0.25, or 1000.75 as needed. The result updates automatically as you type, showing the converted value in real time. No need to click a separate calculate button.

Choosing Units

Select the source unit from the left dropdown and the target unit from the right dropdown. The unit lists show all available options for the current category. Changing either unit immediately recalculates the conversion using the current input value.

Swapping Units

Click the swap button between the unit dropdowns to reverse the conversion direction. This exchanges the from and to units, converting the result back to the original unit type. Use this when you need to check a conversion in both directions.

Quick Convert Presets

Below the main converter, preset buttons show common conversion pairs for the selected category. Click any preset to instantly set both units and see example values. These cover frequent conversions like feet to meters, pounds to kilograms, or Celsius to Fahrenheit.

Understanding Results

The result appears in both the "To" input field and the results display below. The results section shows the conversion formula used, which helps you understand how the calculation works. For example, converting feet to meters shows the multiplication factor 0.3048.

Category Details

Length: Converts between metric units (millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers) and imperial units (inches, feet, yards, miles). Useful for construction, travel distances, and product specifications.

Weight: Handles metric mass (milligrams, grams, kilograms, metric tons) and imperial weight (ounces, pounds, US tons). Common for cooking, shipping, and fitness tracking.

Volume: Converts liquid measurements including milliliters, liters, gallons, quarts, pints, and cups. Essential for cooking recipes from different regions and fuel calculations.

Temperature: Switches between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin. Celsius dominates scientific contexts and most countries. Fahrenheit appears in US weather reports. Kelvin serves physics and engineering.

Area: Converts surface measurements including square meters, square feet, acres, and hectares. Used for real estate, land measurement, and flooring calculations.

Speed: Handles velocity conversions between meters per second, kilometers per hour, miles per hour, and knots. Applied to vehicle speeds, wind measurements, and sports metrics.

Accuracy Notes

All conversion factors use precise values. Temperature conversions use exact formulas rather than approximate multipliers. Results display up to 6 decimal places, though rounding may be appropriate for practical use. For most everyday purposes, 2-3 decimal places suffice.

Common Conversion Factors

Practical Examples

Construction: Convert building plans between metric and imperial. A 12-foot wall equals 3.66 meters. A 2x4 board is actually 1.5 by 3.5 inches, or 38 by 89 millimeters.

Cooking: International recipes use different units. 350°F converts to 175°C for oven temperatures. 1 cup equals approximately 240 milliliters.

Travel: Speed limits differ by country. 65 mph equals 105 km/h. Distance of 100 kilometers equals about 62 miles.

Shipping: Package weights often need conversion. A 50-pound shipment equals 22.68 kilograms for international forms.
